Muffin tops: the fallout

various-029.jpg

Muffin tops. To steal or not to steal? Where do you stand?

I’m in the camp of cutting the muffin in half, length-wise. Decapitating muffins at company meetings (or anywhere) seems wrong. Or are muffin bottoms unfairly stigmatized? Any and all comments on this incendiary topic welcome!

At work, we recently made a web video where a woman gets caught stealing muffin tops. We did at least 15 takes of this scene. Here are the muffins that got sacrificed in the process.

Tastykake now makes muffin tops

various-037.jpg

If you read Ann’s post from October 10th (http://pievcake.wordpress.com/2007/10/10/back-from-vacation/), you saw my stockpile of Kandy Kakes from the WaWa. (“Hey, they were on sale…”) But 2 weeks later…damn, Kandy Kakes, what hath you wrought? Anyway, I will be laying off the Kandy Kakes for a while. Or at least until I can fit back into my jeans comfortably.

Pie V. Cake tees

various-041.jpg

Ann had this made so we could wear them at SPX last weekend. Soon you can order your own through this site! And it’s an American Apparel t-shirt, so you don’t have to worry that it was made by some Asian kid’s nimble fingers.

one point for cake

as the pie person, i am rarely inclined to give any props to cake. here’s an exception.

a friend of mine was getting married. he thinks monkeys are hilarious, and wanted to get a chimp in a tux to be at his wedding. his now-wife rightly said no.

but on the day itself, what appeared at the dessert table?

monkey cake
that’s right. a chimp in a tux.

it’s a sweet story, and a beautiful looking cake. plus, much easier to clean up after than a real chimp.

the bakeoff continues

the latest entry in the bakeoff:
mmmm homemade kandykakes!
i don’t know what these are called, so i’m calling them homemade kandykakes.
growing up in the philadelphia area, i used to love eating the tastykake kandykakes, little drops of cake topped with peanut butter and coated in chocolate. mmmm.
and now, i can make a deliciously gooier variety at home!
seriously. these were good, satisfying the salty-sweet craving.

my coworker adapted this recipe from a pillsbury bakeoff runner up. here it is:
Chocolate Cookie Base:
1 package brownie mix
4 oz cream cheese
1/4 cup melted butter
1 egg
Mix these together and set aside.

Peanut Butter Filling
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup powdered sugar
Mix these together and set aside

Chocolate topping
1 can of frosting (you’ll need this later on)

1. Preheat over to 350 degrees.
2. Take a tbsp of the chocolate cookie mixture and drop it onto an ungreased baking sheet. Flatten the top slightly with the back of the spoon. Drop a tsp of the peanut butter mixture on top of the cookie mixture.
3. Repeat until the cookie sheet is full.
4. Bake between 10-14 minutes (my coworker swears by 12 minutes.)
5. Let cookies cool, and frost with chocolate frosting.

I’m going to be working on a vegan version of this recipe. Once I come up with something, I’ll let you know.
