birthday cake mashup

birthday cake mashup
you’d think that the concept of eating the mashed-together remnants of two leftover birthday cakes should be repulsive.

but really, it was quite delicious.

oh, and these two cakes also came along with a brand-spanking new cake as well:
funfetti!
funfetti? yum!

Cheating on WCM cake with Caramelita

caramelita-004.jpg

This is officially my new favorite cake. The white chocolate mousse cake from Watergate Pastry had a nice long run. But the Caramelita (from Les Halles restaurant in DC) has won me over with its whipped caramel mousse, layer of fresh pineapple and spongy bottom. Just check out this cross section. You know you want it! Caveat: It is pretty sweet, so brew up some bitter tea or soy milk to have with it.

Post-Thanksgiving pie review

caramelita-002.jpgcaramelita-001.jpg

I know I’m the cake lover, but sometimes I get weak for pie. Tis the season and everything…

We had 2 kinds of pies from A Southern Season (Chapel Hill-based fancy foods place) over Thanksgiving: pumpkin and sour-cream apple.

I dug the pumpkin. Tasty filling, nicely browned crust. I dug it so much I ate half the pie by myself (over the course of 3 days, ok?) and hid the leftovers in the fridge from my dad.

Too bad the sour-cream apple was a letdown. The contrast of the sour and sweet should have worked. Instead I was slightly grossed out. Meh!

cake and crime – a clear connection

connect the dots, people.

no one’s using pie in any of these cases, are they?
i rest my case.

post-thanksgiving malaise

if you have noticed a dearth of posts on here lately, it’s because i’ve been suffering from post-thanksgiving malaise.

thanksgiving is kind of the high holy day for pie lovers. we had three different types at the dinner i attended.
but once it’s over?
well.
that’s pretty much it for pie for the next few months.
instead, the focus is on christmas cookies.
and fruitcake.
and then post-new year’s dieting.

meaning that the heyday of pie won’t come around again until spring, when newly arrived fresh fruits get people thinking about delicious tarts.

so yes, it’s taken me a couple days to bounce back.

but now, i’m more determined than ever to create a haven for pie lovers on the web, so that they don’t have to suffer through the long cold months of winter without some warm fruit filling and buttery crust to comfort them.
